Tennessee Valley GRITS

Meet the Atlanta GRITS

Their Leader

Laura Mickels

Laura is a new GRITS member and excited to open a new chapter in Huntsville, Alabama, The Heart of the Tennessee Valley.

Having spent most of her career in California and Colorado, she returned to her hometown of Huntsville in 2005. While in Colorado, she started shooting sporting clays with her husband Mike. Her first shotgun was a Remington 1187 youth 20 gauge, but she found a renewed love for the sport when she was introduced to the Fabarm Syren 12 gauge!

Laura and Mike own the wealth management firm CochranMickels Retirement Specialists. She has always been passionate about helping women step out of their comfort zones, whether it is with their finances or learning to shoot a shotgun.

She started the fundraiser “Lipstick ‘N Lead” which introduced women to the fun of breaking targets with a shotgun while raising money for a local charity, and also organized the first women’s shotgun sports league in this area. GRITS is the perfect extension for these girls who are really into shooting!

When Laura is not helping people retire, she and her husband are at Limestone Hunting Preserve and Sporting Clays practicing or introducing friends and clients to the game of sporting clays. Laura is also the past president of the Women’s Economic Development Council and the Financial & Estate Planning Council of Huntsville.
