Meet the Piedmont GRITS

Their Leader

Linda J. Cowasjee

Linda grew up in suburban New York. From a very early age, she felt out of place with the cookie-cutter houses and endless paved roads. She loved the outdoors and every free minute she’d be out investigating the nearby woods. Obsessed with horses, she left home to work at a hunter/jumper stable in exchange for board for herself and a mare she rescued from slaughter.
She was determined to live in the countryside where she could be closer to nature and work with animals. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science. Then she put aside her dreams of attending Veterinary School to return to Suburbia with her new husband. She went back to the Thoroughbred world and served as the Executive Director of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) until the Association moved its headquarters to Kentucky.
Linda moved to Virginia in 1988 and began raising Irish Draught Horses for foxhunting, eventing and showjumping. She is also a long-time breeder and judge of Jack Russell Terriers.
Her typical farm clothing choice is pajamas, a hoodie, and bare feet.
When she isn’t glued to a computer, chasing critters or busting clays, Linda spends time hunting her terriers, fly fishing or travelling. She is a lover of good (!) champagne and listening to “Audio Books” because she cannot read for more than a few minutes without falling asleep.
