Meet the GRITS at Orvis Hill Country

About Orvis GRITS

What is Orvis Hill Country?
Orvis Hill Country Shooting Grounds and Sporting Clays Course is now open to the public. Located in the rolling hills of southern Pennsylvania in the town of Blue Ridge Summit, Orvis Hill Country is just 25 minutes south of Gettysburg, and 1.5 hours from the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Located on over 500 acres, this beautiful and historic property is the newest venue in the Orvis Shooting Grounds Collection, joining Orvis Sandanona and Orvis Pursell Farms as the premier sporting clays, upland hunting, and instructional shooting properties in the world.

Facing southeast on Haycock Mountain the original farmhouse, now part of the sporting lodge, and the barn were built around 1790 of hand-hewn chestnut beams which still carry the markings of the craftsmen who built them. This storied building with its rich 200-year history as a working farm, now houses the Orvis Pro Shop and provides amenities catering to sporting clays enthusiasts as well as Orvis Hill Country’s upland hunting members.

When are the events?
On the second Saturday of every month, Orvis Hill Country will be hosting a GRITS event involving shooting and comradery to follow. Our facility will be open to use following shooting whether you are interested in casting on the pond or enjoying a bite to eat on our porch with a view.

What do we have to offer?
Here at Orvis Hill Country we offer a 15-station sporting clays course with a wide variety of target presentations set back in our rich woodland environment that partially covers our hill-side property. We also offer a 5-stand course comprised of eight different target presentations designed to keep you on your toes and potentially help you warm up for the course. Our facility also has a pond filled with largemouth bass, catfish, and blue-gills which is open to use following an afternoon of shooting. We are also a k-9 friendly facility, so you are welcome to bring your four-legged companions (as long as they are leashed). We also offer shooting instruction specifically catered to the needs of the individual regardless of skill level! Beginners are always welcome and encouraged to start with a lesson to start off on the right foot and to get comfortable with the sport.

Their Leader

Miriam Meglan

Miriam Meglan is fairly new to shotguns and shooting.  She was introduced to Sporting Clays in 2018 though the YMCA of Frederick County’s annual tournament that raises money for children’s programs, and all it took was breaking one clay.  She was hooked and is now officially and seriously addicted to the sport.

“I’m not the world’s most proficient shot – yet – but I’m getting better all the time and it’s a lot of fun to go out shooting with a group of other women who laugh a lot, encourage one another, and enjoy the challenge of trying to break little clay discs flying through the air from different directions, angles, and rates of speed,” she says.  “G.R.I.T.S. is a great group; the staff of our Orvis Hill Country Shooting Grounds home base is very supportive of us; and I’m committed to doing what I can to help the Hill Country Chapter remain a welcoming, fun club for everyone, at all levels of experience.”
