Their Leader

 Chapter Leader: Andrea Seefeldt Knight

Click Andrea’s name to read what the Baltimore Sun has to say about this former jockey!

Andrea Seefeldt Knight was a professional jockey for 13 years, rode in over 6,200 races, winning 605 of them, while competing on an equal basis with men. Her mounts earned $8,000,000. She was the 3rd woman to ever ride in the Kentucky Derby in 1991 (there are currently 6) and the 2nd ever to ride in the Preakness in 1994 (currently 3). Her biggest win was in the $150,000 Pennsylvania Derby in 1991, which now has $1 million dollar purse. She retired in 1994 and spent time retraining retired Thoroughbred racehorses first in the show hunter world and then later she became an avid Fox Hunter.

In 2010, she was asked to come out of retirement to ride in the 1st ever race for retired female jockeys, the Lady Legends for the Cure. Pimlico the day before the Preakness. After riding the race (and winning it in 2014), she realized that she missed the challenge of training for a sport and that at 48, being a full-time jockey again was not a good idea. That is when she found Sporting Clays.

Since then, Andrea has trained for and competed at clay’s tournaments, with many accomplishments. She is now a Master Class Shooter and has made NSCA Lady Team USA FITASC, MD State Lady Champion and the Lady All American Teams.

Andrea was disappointed that there were so few women shooting clays and decided to get more women involved. She is a NSCA Certified Instructor, a product of the A.I.M. Shooting School and the resident Instructor at First Mine Run, a private club in Baltimore County, Md. She had a small group of women shooting once a month when she learned G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Really Into Shooting) was opening national chapters. Andrea jumped at the chance to be involved with GRITS and to give local women more opportunities to share the joy of the sport with other like-minded women. The group is called Delmarva GRITS currently boasting 50 members and growing. They have met at Pintail Point, M&M, PG County, Warrington, Oxford, Loch Raven and First Mine Run. The Delmarva area is full of great shooting venues providing lots of opportunities for this group to shoot.

Andrea truly enjoys teaching and finds it more rewarding when her students break a target than doing it herself. She wants to instill confidence in women and let them know that they can do anything that they choose, conventional or not.
